Help! I've just been asked to be the science specialist at our school which
means I will have to spend one period each week with each grade creating
science activities that may or may not be related to each class's curriculum.
The parents really want to see a lot of hands on
projects/experiments/demonstrations. I really want the time spent to be
meaningful and fun. Any ideas for good resources materials?

I teach a
primary multiage class and have a student who's heavy into Clifford the Red
Dog. Many years ago, I recall having a set of classroom rules with a
"Clifford" theme and I've been trying to remember them to use with
this little guy. All I can come up with so far is: "Did you wait your turn
in line? - That's fine!" and "A cheerful loser is a hero, even if his
team gets zero." Can anyone recall any of the other sayings/rules? Thanks
in advance for your help.

year old boy who has just moved to our school after his parents split up.He his
grandparents live nearby and look after his baby sister while mum goes to work.
he goes to his grandparents after school. Peter has excellent vocab but poor
reading skills his written work is limited. In math his achievement is above
average and he enjoys individual problem solving. He plays on his own at
recess. Peter prefers to work on his own at the computer when their is a choice
of activities. What do I need to know to help him and promote learning and
achievement? How do I motivate and what learning strategies should I use?

I have used
several great ideas from Teachers helping teachers since I found the site 3

have been using for years and puts them in the form of a story and work book.
My nine year-olds loved it. Check it out on my home page, “get-the-idea.net”
and if you want to try it on your students, contact me at gunni@ismennt.is. I
will save you the printing and puzzling together of the pages and send you a
copy, which you can photocopy for your class.

answer my question. What is the purpose of time limits on exams? Taking a IQ
test with a time limit, I score 90. With no time limit I score 122. I am not

around the Sept. 11th annivesary. (which happens pretty quickly after school
begins!) I teach in a small, self-contained, special ed school (behavioral) and
I am looking for ideas that our whole school (from 1-8th graders) can
particpate in. Something along the lines of a peace or respect-related
mini-unit, or art activity that can be done at the various levels and perhaps
displayed in a central location. Thanks in advance for your ideas. -- Pam

I am an
itinerant teacher who works with 5K and 1st graders who are transitioning from
the preschool special education class (small class of 3-5 yr olds) into regular
kindergarten classes or into EMD / LD / or ED self contained classes of mostly
4th and 5th graders. I am looking for suggestions on ways to help my students
adjust to these classes, ways teachers can accomadate these students in the
special ed class and in the mainstream and also- suggestions for dealing with
regular education teachers who see the word "special ed" and assume
that the student should not be in their class at all. Suggestions from Regular
ed teachers about what help they need would be appreciated. I get alot of
complaints about the problems of special ed students in the mainstream but very
little actual suggestions about what would help. Thanks!

Hello everyone,
Hope you are all enjoying your summer. This is a great website and has already
been so helpful. I have a few questions though. This is my first year of
teaching and I am extremly nervous, I just don't know what to do first. I have
been preparing myself by reading the assigned summer reading, preparing letters
to send to students and parents, organizing a classroom policy and reward
system and, getting some materials that I know will be helpful. Orientation is
not until the last week of August but I'm unsure about what I should do till
then. When do I start going to school and prepping my classroom? My class is a
7th grade resource room, I will be teaching their language arts class and
support, the other subject areas are an inclusion setting. All of your thoughts
would be very helpful. Mitcharoo@aol.com

To
"xlfkbyen" who didn't come to this site to meet freinds or to be
asked to donate materials. This site, as far as I know, is open to all who want
to help children. If we seek moral or spiritual help, if we seek to do a better
job by asking for things we see our children need, we are teachers because we
care about children. If you see something you do not wish to read, scroll
down--perhaps later you will find something that meets YOUR needs, or a person
YOU can help. We don't all have the same needs, or desires, or wants. Barbara

I am looking for
information (actual experience ideas) about how your grade school uses its ESL
teachers. Do you have push in or pull out programs? How many students do the
ESL teachers work with at a time? Do they work in your room, in the hall, or in
their own ESL room? Does the classroom teacher create the assignments, or do
the ESL teachers create their tasks? What works best for classroom and ESL
teachers?
