Safe Passage

support for those struggling with homosexuality

Isaiah 43:2. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Annual Report for 1999

The Lord has been faithful to lead participants to Safe Passage (a healing support group) who are longing for a deepened journey of intimacy with God amidst struggles related to homosexuality. (http://www.pacificnet.net/~sonia/sp.html). Our weekly gatherings of 2-10 people include worship, teaching, healing prayer, occasional Communion, and group support -- connecting each one with the holy and compassionate Shepherd Whose own heart is extended to us in joy and vulnerability, and Who has the power to redeem in us the capacity to connect with others in ways that uniquely reflect His own character. In the midst of prayer and worship, the Lord reveals His love and healing presence, and in fellowship there is honesty, strength, and encouragement unto greater devotion unto Him.

As ever, some participants took the plunge into Living Waters (a nine-month healing program offered by Desert Stream), others returned for ongoing support, and yet others unseen remained connected with us in "cyberspace" through prayer and discussion. A new work, Justice and Respect (http://www.justice-respect.org/), has been launched to inspire the Church unto a higher standard of self-sacrificing love which refuses the allure of worldly polemical strategies that ultimately erode the authority she would otherwise have to proclaim righteousness into the surrounding Culture. As such, it is beginning to receive widespread visibility and it is our prayer that it can serve as a creative alternative for Christians caught in the false polarity of phariseeical detachment versus worldly compassion. In all these things, continued intercession is much valued, for it is the fertile ground in which Safe Passage and related ministries can thrive.

Plans for 2000 include ongoing prayer-team participation in healing conferences, deepened intercession, ongoing correspondences across the Divide of those searching for understanding; teaching of workshops, expanded writings and essays, and availability to equip and encourage others to faithfully share Christ's healing presence to those seeking to reflect His image from the core of their being. The unrestrained willingness to entrust one's depths unto Christ, Who withheld nothing of Himself from us -- and relinquish all that would otherwise define or humanly compel us -- is indeed a powerful evidence of His grace and a profound symbol of renewal for the whole Church!
