Help! I've just been asked to be the science specialist at our school which
means I will have to spend one period each week with each grade creating
science activities that may or may not be related to each class's curriculum.
The parents really want to see a lot of hands on
projects/experiments/demonstrations. I really want the time spent to be
meaningful and fun. Any ideas for good resources materials?

I teach a
primary multiage class and have a student who's heavy into Clifford the Red
Dog. Many years ago, I recall having a set of classroom rules with a
"Clifford" theme and I've been trying to remember them to use with
this little guy. All I can come up with so far is: "Did you wait your turn
in line? - That's fine!" and "A cheerful loser is a hero, even if his
team gets zero." Can anyone recall any of the other sayings/rules? Thanks

Peter is a 9
year old boy who has just moved to our school after his parents split up.He his
grandparents live nearby and look after his baby sister while mum goes to work.
he goes to his grandparents after school. Peter has excellent vocab but poor
reading skills his written work is limited. In math his achievement is above
average and he enjoys individual problem solving. He plays on his own at
recess. Peter prefers to work on his own at the computer when their is a choice
of activities. What do I need to know to help him and promote learning and
achievement? How do I motivate and what learning strategies should I use?

I am teaching
fifth and sixth grade computer classes this year. My classroom set-up is beyond
my control, as I have to "share" the Tech Ed lab, which is
predesigned. My "challenge" is this: how do i maintain control of a
class of 30 5th graders in a classroom set up with the computers lining each
wall (the student faces the wall). it was a nightmare last year. Any ideas?????

Our school is
purchasing art books this year for the middle school grades. This is my first
year as a art teacher. I have taught at this school however for nine years in
music..I have found the titles Introducing Art, by mittler, ragans, morman,
unsworth, scannell and the titles Exploring Art and Understanding Art by

I am looking for
a readaloud to start the year with Grade 6/7, something to co-ordinate with the
Socials unit "Marooned". This unit is a simulation with a group of
kids shipwrecked on a Pacific island, and works through them creating a culture
in order to survive, so some kind of survival book would be appropriate.
(Cannot use Island of the Blue Dolphin - they studied it last year) Any good

I am a new PE

Do you have weel

that has changed my life for the better! It is so common sense, practical, and
fun for the students. I have been told that this system is at work in grades

answer my question. What is the purpose of time limits on exams? Taking a IQ
test with a time limit, I score 90. With no time limit I score 122. I am not
more smart because I have enough time to think through the test, I just have
more time so I get more correct answers. The purpose of a exam is to test
knowledge not "knowledge under presure", right? Please help me
understand this!

I am an
itinerant teacher who works with 5K and 1st graders who are transitioning from
the preschool special education class (small class of 3-5 yr olds) into regular
kindergarten classes or into EMD / LD / or ED self contained classes of mostly
4th and 5th graders. I am looking for suggestions on ways to help my students
adjust to these classes, ways teachers can accomadate these students in the
special ed class and in the mainstream and also- suggestions for dealing with
regular education teachers who see the word "special ed" and assume
that the student should not be in their class at all. Suggestions from Regular
ed teachers about what help they need would be appreciated. I get alot of
complaints about the problems of special ed students in the mainstream but very

I am a middle

grammar daily instead of my previous position as a literature based writing

Hope you are all enjoying your summer. This is a great website and has already
been so helpful. I have a few questions though. This is my first year of
teaching and I am extremly nervous, I just don't know what to do first. I have
been preparing myself by reading the assigned summer reading, preparing letters
to send to students and parents, organizing a classroom policy and reward
system and, getting some materials that I know will be helpful. Orientation is
not until the last week of August but I'm unsure about what I should do till

Help! I am a
first year special ed. teacher and I just found out that I do not have a
classroom. I have a cart and must travel the halls to empty classrooms! Does

small school and we have the problem of not having verymany 7th graders this
year. We normallyhave enough for afull class of each grade in middle school.

I think this is
a wonderful site. I am looking forward to digging deeper. I have a nine week
integrated lesson called "Hidden Treasures of the Cape Fear," my team
created at a Teaching Academy this past summer. We live on the coast of North
Carolina. Most of our kids do not know much about the rich history of our
state. The students will be doing activites including Pirates, Lighthouses,
shipwrecks, Civil War battlefield quad study, Aquarium field trip, Museum field
trip, & tracking hurricanes. They will have guest speakers on the Civil
War, an imitation pirate, & a meteorologist. They will read Treasure
Island, keep a journal of reflection as a pirate, and produce tangible products
such as lighthouses and pirate ships. We are very excited about this challenge.

I have an odd,
but frustrating problem: I'm excited to be moving into my first classroom, but
the teacher before me insisted on dividing the blackboards into sections with
masking tape. The tape has dried and when I tried to peel it off, only sections
came off...leaving a gross residue of dried tape. Is there some magical trick
at removing old masking tape from blackboards?

Hello, I hope
someone out there can help me with a small problem I have. I just completed my
first year of teaching and I'm preparing myself for the second year. My problem
I'm having has to do with my teaching subject. The subject I taught last year
was 9th grade biology (which I loved), but I had to move to another school
district this next year becasue of my commute everyday and now (this next year)
I'm going to be teaching 7th grade science. I have no problem with the contenct
of the subject, I just don't know what the curriculum is at my new district. It
is a smaller district than my first district and my principal has told me just
to follow the TEKS (if you teach in Texas, you know what that is). So, my
question to anyone out there who can help...I desperatly need some help with
7th grade science curriculum (ex. what I need to be teaching from six weeks to
six weeks), an outline format would be perfect?? I guess I'm only addressing
this to the teachers of Texas because, by law, we have to follow the TEKS.

I received my
teaching certificate about 10 years ago - but never taught in the public

I'm trying to
find examples of the use of student self-evaluation journals outside of ESL/EFL
classrooms. I use the last 10-15 mins. of a 90 min. class to have the students
write a self-evaluation of their study activities. The information they are
required to provide is: name, date, learning goals for that class period, a
self-evaluation of their mastery of that class's goals, what if anything was
particularly enjoyable or distasteful, and any comments or questions the have
for me on any subject. As this is an EFL class, responces are primarily
concerned with grammar,pronunciation,vocabulary,and culture. The primary goal
of this activity is to promote reflection on the lesson to aid retention of the
studied materials, but it has also proven to be a good source of motovation,
and a strong predictor of students with poor study habits (serious
procrastinators are very likely to submit incomplete journal entries whereas
studious but low level students nearly always submit complete entries. Do any
of you teaching subjects other than ESL use this classroom exercise? And, if
you do, where did you learn of it? Please send me an e-mail if you do some
thing similar.

I have been
running a pilot, providing my primary school children with bottled water,
available on their tables during lesson time to aid concentration and prevent
dehydration and associated problems. I now wish to run the project for all 350
pupils in the school. Does anyone have experience of such a scheme? Where did
you get your bottles? How did you keep them clean etc? I'd love to hear your
