Yesterday, someone in the class stoled a caculator. I didn"t realize this until class had ended for the day. I am very mad. This is a middle school class of behavior problem students. Does anyone have any ideas to get these students to stop stealing? They have taken things from my desk and have picked up things just sitting .

---But you have to make sure you"re not giving them stupid choices. "Scott, you can do your homework or you can sit in the back of the room." It"s more like, "You can choose to do your work now or during recess while the other children play, it"s your choice." Then when he"s chosen not to do his work, you let him know, "I"m sorry you"ve chosen to do your work during recess." Just an off-the-top-of-my-head example, but you get the idea.

My brother is o.d.d. The trick is to give him choices. If you tell him to do something, he"ll do everything but what you tell him, but if you give him a reasonable choice, 99.9% of the time, he"ll make the right decision.

What lessons can you recommend I use/create to get a student to write to the prompts I give him? He is great in all other aspects of writing, but for some reason is always OFF PROMPT, which won"t help w/the state test in the spring.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for THT. This is a wonderful tool and I am finding so much useful things!

I am a special education teacher fairly new to the field and I am beginning a new job this week. Does anyone have any good beginning ice breakers and activities to do for the first week? I am working with so many students who are grouped by levels rather than age - so I need something age appropriate, entertaining and motivating. I am working with boys ages 9-16. Thanks!

Get ahold of the book, THE NEW-TEACHER TOOLBOX, www.zephyrpress.com or Amazon.com. There is a chapter devoted to dealing with stress. (Overall, the book is a how-to, survival book for new teachers who don"t have the mentor teacher guidance that they SHOULD have). Good luck!

I am a first year High School Science teacher. I wanted an elementary postition but they forced Science on me because I have taken several courses in Biological Sciences but that was several years ago. I feel more comfortable with elementary students, which is my major. People in this particular district have told me that if I am a day ahead of the students I am doing good. But they also say that the students are far behind and not capable of learning very much. How can I relate science to my students without making them feel like they are elementary students? Could anyone please give me some advice. Also, I am supposed to have a mentor. She tells me everyday that we need to get together, but she can never make time for me. Can anyone give me any ideas for physical science and biology experiment/demonstrations?

I teach ESL at a middle school, grades 6-8. I am always looking for ESL lesson plans or websites. As for classroom discipline, my 25 years of military service comes in handy. I am very strict with my students in the first week of school. To the point of making them stand with one foot on a particular line facing me. Once they understand how serious I am about this, the transition inside the classroom is orderly and remains that way. After the first week I can relax some tasks but my students know what I expect.
