We teach "Roll of Thunder" in our 8th grade reading classes. we have not had a problem with any of the racist comments in the book; however, the teacher prefaces the book as being a period piece. I would be happy to get you two in touch so you can talk about how she has taught the unit. Just email me!

Does anyone teach "Roll of Thunder" by Mildred Taylor in their classroom? I plan on teaching this novel next year (8th grade) in conjunction with a unit on the depression. I was questioning wether or not it is acceptable (due to racist wording)in the classroom.

In answer to Cindy regarding fund raising. I along with our "Green Team" student members have raised approximately $1800.00 so far selling stainless steel water bottles. After much research via the internet we found a Canadian company that has different styles of really good quality SS bottles at a price we found very reasonable. www.stainlesssteelbottles.ca

Janie,

Your query about "free riders" in the cooperative classroom groups.
Three points:
1. Let the delegation of duty be very clear right from the start. However, the assigned duty should be commensurate with ability - perceived or assumed.

2. Avoid giving the impression that some assignments are superior to others as the ones assigned "mundane" tasks will protest by not contributing.

And last, keep an eye on the identified "culprits" and make sure you provide the necessary encouragement and scaffolding to enable them pull through with the task at hand.

contribute to the learning of the group. What are
some strategies that you could use as a teacher to prevent the “free rider” phenomenon
from taking place? What could you do to empower students to hold each other
accountable for working in groups?

If you need a few more lesson plan ideas, or you want to share a great one, go to teachershare.scholastic.com I have used this site for about a month and have found plenty of plans that go along w/4th grade. This has saved me loads of time. I"m even going to put one of my lessons up there because it looks quick and easy to post.

Hi , i am a tertiary instructor at our local tafe.
Great site, its great to see a site like this , there should be more of it.
i have been teaching 10 years now in the field of mechanical engineering.
Sometimes its difficult, but the rewards far outweigh the satisfaction gained from watching a difficult student become a great one.
thanks for the opportunity.

I"m happy that theres such a rich source of information for something as important as education. I"d also like to know why this is a "Requiered field" (sic) rather than a "Required field". That"ll cost ya 5 points right there buddy-boy and this is a major grade.
