I was wondering how different teachers set a "climate for thinking" in their classrooms? What specific strategies do you use and why? I am taking a class where I need different opinions about this topic. Thanks.

I am an experience classroom teacher of 16 yrs. I have been out of the classroom for 5 yrs. I have been working as a Reading First support teacher for the past 3 yrs. I am presently in my last semester of a Master"s in Early Childhood Education at Lincoln University. I will be reentering the classroom as first grade teacher. I"m excited and anxious to be working with children on a daily basis. Many things have changed since I had my own classroom. I hope this site and others will help me to catch up on those changes. One of those things is centers, I am familiar with them but do not know how to begin them.

Great website. I used the "I am" poem model from the language arts section of this site and adapted it to my grade 7 Math class. It was amazing. I did it once at the beginning of the year and then again towards the end. The difference in use of mathematical language was fantastic. Thanks to whoever submitted the idea.

I"m looking for a specific type of algebra puzzle that I used about 5 years ago for my 5th graders. I can"t remember the name for these puzzles. Each sheet pictured a large scale in which 2 or 3 sets of shapes had to balance in terms of values. Kids were given clues to help them determine which shapes held which values. Does anyone know what these algebra puzzles are called?

Special Education Help Please!!!
Hi. I am a first year teacher and am getting ready to start teaching students with emotional disabilities. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a good classroom "behavior" plan. In my student teaching experience I was in a resource classroom and gave a verbal warning before pulling a card on a four point system. However, I"ve been told by several educators that if I use the same system, my kids would lose all of their cards by 9 am. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as what type of "point" or discipline system to use with these students? I have grades 1-3, with a range of severe ADHD, autism, developmental delay, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Oh, and for those first year teachers who are posting...congratulations! This year will be the hardest, and most memorable, of your career :)
As for decorating, keep it simple and just remember to surround yourself with things that you enjoy looking at. You need your classroom to be a place that you actually WANT to be in this year. Choose colors that are fairly soothing (like blue and green), because there is sure to be enough action when the kids get involved.
If you have any other specific questions, feel free to email me...I remember my first year clearly and also work at a teacher supply store, so I am pretty familiar with what is available :) Good luck, and happy planning!

I am teaching 4th grade inclusion this year. It will be my 3rd year with 4th graders, and I am just starting to get a feel for what they this is "cool". Luckily, at this age, they are still looking to teachers as role models and listen (even when they seem like they aren"t) to absolutely everything that I say.
My theme last year was "choices", and it went pretty well. The kids loved the idea that they had freedom to choose certain things for themselves (like books and seating arrangements, etc). This year, though, with the inclusion class I am going to go a little more general and just have a School of Rock theme. I have been maximizing on all of the Hannah Montana and Camp Rock "stuff" at the super stores for decorations. The good thing about this theme is that it will give me a place to start with working on self-esteem and acceptance with the variety of kids in my room.

I have taught on an isolated native reserve in northern Ontario (Canada) for 6 years. I have always taught at the primary level, but am now moving to a new reserve to teach at the junior level (Grade 5.)

I would appreciate any advice -- general or specific -- from experienced teachers on teaching at this level -- classroom management tips, evaluation, what kids this age consider "cool" or not.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.
